Primary Area of Cardiovascular Research Interest
-
Lipotoxic diseases, especially with respect to liver injury and the role of the liver in systemic lipotoxic injury (eg vascular disease)
Related Areas of Cardiovascular Research Interest
-Mechanisms of trans -fat induced cellular injury in relationship to the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.
Summary of Cardiovascular Research Interest
We have established a mouse model of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis based on feeding mice a high trans -fat diet. Through its role in synthesizing, metabolizing and secreting lipids, the liver plays a central role in lipid metabolism. Although our work focuses specifically on the mechanisms of liver injury during trans -fat feeding, the metabolic changes that we have observed (hypercholesterolemia, hepatic insulin resistance) have broader implications, especially with respect to cardiovascular disease, that warrant further investigation.
