Summary of Cardiovascular Research Interest
We have been interested in evaluating outcomes of patients with advanced heart failure. In particular, we have examined issues pertinent to decision-making, resource utilization and the option of device therapy (implantable defibrillator and resynchronization therapy). In many studies we perform data analyses of large administrative databases. Efforts over the last five years have included the evaluation of (1) the use of home inotropic therapy for end-stage heart failure using data from the Medicare contractor for the DMERC benefit, (2) changes in the use of nesiritide for decompensated heart failure following publications suggesting harm (3) cost associated with the care of hospitalized patients with heart failure (4) physician attitudes toward advanced heart failure with data derived from a large national survey of physicians (5) the characteristics of patients with heart failure referred to hospice (6) the degree to which mitral regurgitation impacts health-related quality of life and (7) the variability of quality of life in advanced HF.
